Today marks exactly 20 years since I received our Lord in the Eucharist. I don’t remember much of that very special day, but I know that there was a lot of cake, and I enjoyed eating it.
Before 2018, the Eucharist didn’t have any real importance in my Catholic-Christian faith, it was just a part of the Mass I had to sit through, and that is when I did go to Mass. When I started to learn more about the Catholic faith, I was hesitant to know more about the Eucharist, as it seemed too big of a mystery to even comprehend.
It wasn’t exactly a lightbulb moment, and the Eucharist is still a big mystery to comprehend, however once I allowed myself to open my heart for to Jesus coming into my life through the bread and wine, I fell in love with Christ in the Eucharist.
I have confidence that Christ is truly present in the bread and wine, because the yearning I have had for the Eucharist over the past few years is a unique and extraordinary feeling of comfort, that one can only have in the presence of a loved one.
Reflecting on the importance of the Eucharist, and communion, isn’t as complicated as it can be made out to be. Going back to devouring cake on the day of my First Communion, cake can be a good way to express the symbolical connection of what we experience through Holy Communion.
When we think about a birthday party or any special occasion, there is one big thing that stands at the centre – the cake. Personally, I’m not a big fan of cake now-a-days, (contrary to popular belief), but I do believe it has a big part to play in social gatherings as like the Eucharist, it is the high point of the party.
Recently I celebrated a few occasions with the church I work for. Being gathered around the table in fellowship, indulging in cake reminded me of the beauty of communion. Sharing cake reminds us that we belong. Also, the big point is thanksgiving. When the host gives out cake, they are basically saying, “thank you for joining me, you belong here”.
The Eucharist is indeed a fellowship over our One, Holy and unchangeable God. Through the Bread and wine that Jesus gives us, he says: Thank you for coming and seeing Me, you belong here and I love you.”
