Mary, Queen of Heaven

In the Catholic Church, we also see Mary as the Gebirah (Queen Mother). This term Queen Mother may be very unfamiliar to us, as the name only appears a limited amount of times through the Old Testament. This royal title comes from the times in the Davidic Kingdom and is Biblical. The word Gebirah appears fifteen times in the Old Testament. Usually, we would expect that the King would reserve the chair next to him for his wife. However, a King would probably have many wives, yet only one birthmother, therefore, the seat next to the King's throne was reserved for His mother, making her the Queen Mother. There is evidence too that the Queen Mother was also highly regarded (see 1 Kings 2:19). There is no real definition in the Bible of what the Queen Mother does within the Royal Kingdom. The Bible only speaks about the Queen Mothers at that time. After the Royal Davidic Kingdom split into two, the role of the Gebirah was only practised within the Kingdom of Judea. However, Christians know that Jesus is the true King and restores the Davidic Kingdom, and as Mary is Jesus' mother, that would make her the new Gebirah. In regards to the Davidic Kingdom, God promises that David's Kingdom will reign forever.

Also, interesting to note that the King never refused to listen to His mother (see 1 Kings 2:20). This foreshadows the Wedding at Cana when Mary intercedes on behalf of the Wedding attendants and tells Jesus that there was no more wine. Even though His reply can sound off-putting, Jesus listens to His mother and takes action.

Another hint that Mary is the Queen of Heaven is the passage in Revelation that we have looked at a few times now. "A great portent appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars"" (Revelation 12:1). Who is this woman that is being mentioned? We can see later in the passage that the child who was to be born would be the ruler of nations.  "And she gave birth to a son, a male child, who is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron. But her child was snatched away and taken to God and his throne" (Revelation 12:5), We can see that the ruler of nations must be Jesus, and therefore the women who delivered Him must be His mother, Mary. The significance of the 12 stars on her head represents the 12 tribes of Israel. It shows Jesus restores the 12 tribes through his death and resurrection.
