Why Believe?

Do our bodies and cells make up the entirety of who we are? Or is there a deeper aspect of us—a spiritual side—that exists separately from our physical selves? Humans are rational beings with souls, which means we have a spiritual side to us. This sets us apart from animals. We have the capacity for free will, with the capacity to love.

Every one of us is original. We are each distinctly unique and special in our own way. But our presence here is not a accident. Each of us has a purpose, a desire, and a destination. Humans are always searching for meaning in life. Whether it be trying to find happiness, love, or the search for truth. We are on a quest for knowledge whatever it may be. All of us desire activities and pleasures in life. We yearn for a sense of power or control over our lives along with excitement. Though, everything in life is only temporary - good food, income, and careers. We may struggle when short-term things in our lives end, if we place too much emphasis on them.

Faith is personal to each one of us. Time and space does not limit God, He is omnipresent. Because the relationship between science and God can sometimes be difficult to comprehend, we don't always want to engage with the topic of God. We can gain knowledge from science, but only about the material world. Science is unable to explain the reasons behind the search for something extra. What caused the universe to exist? Why are humans on the planet? Why do we seek out the meaning of life, why do we love, care for others, have emotions and feelings?

God for many people looks different. Many people find God in a church, worship songs, reading the Bible, and in nature. The personality and the physical structure of God appears differently to different people. Many of us try to put God into a box, we try to act like God the Father is a normal everyday person like us. Many people don’t see any God or have rejected the idea of there being a God at all.

But the one true God, the Christian God is an everlasting, all knowing, unchangeable God. Christians didn’t invent a God to make us feel comfortable or give us hope when we need it. We aren’t knocking on God’s door to give us something; rather, God is knocking on our door so He can give us something.

God desires us to belong to Him, and He cares for us immensely. We sometimes want to oversee our own lives, make our own path. But unfortunately, we will all fail in one way or another. We were not made to live life alone. God is eternal and is the pure definition of love; there is no love like the love that God shows to us. God has a purpose for each of us. He wants us to be in a relationship with Him and wants to hear from us.

Being a Catholic, or a Christian in general, does not mean that we will live a life of unremitting happiness while being in this world. We will encounter hardships, persecution, trials, and labour; but one thing's for sure, even though God allows suffering on this Earth, He is with us, and has plans for us.
