Significance of Bread and Wine
On a Christian Facebook page during COVID, many various Christian laities were sharing their food choices for their church's communion service. Things such as chips, soft drink, crackers were put in place instead of bread and wine/grape juice to accommodate their church's live stream. This infuriated many traditional Christian groups as they saw it as a mockery of the true meaning of Communion.
The importance of having bread and wine didn't start during the Lord's Supper; nor did it begin in John chapter 6. The importance of bread and wine started in Genesis 14 when Melchizedek offers bread and wine in thanksgiving, as previously stated. As we then move through the book of Exodus, we see a higher meaning of bread in particular. In Exodus 25:23-30, we read God giving instructions on how the table that is to have the bread of the presence on it shall be. The table will be overlaid with pure gold.
Although, what is the bread of the presence exactly? This bread was essential to the Israelites because it is said to have held the presence of God. This was a food offering done by priests. It was an unbloody sacrifice. The Jews saw this bread as something extraordinary, rather than just ordinary bread.
